Be patient. Find at least twenty minutes every day for learning a new language. Twenty minutes where there will be only you and new words, phrases, sentences, grammar rules, exercises.
Be easy and gentle to yourself. Let foreign words flow naturally with songs that you like singing in the car or while taking a shower. Speak in your new language as often as you can, with tourists, with your friends, with your cat or with yourself.
Be passionate. Fall in love with a book that you’re eager to read in its original language. Fall in love with a place where people speak in that language. Or fall in love with a foreigner.
Portraits by Aliza Brown
Indianapolis-based photographer Aliza Brown is one to watch. Her dreamy portraits seamlessly connect the raw emotion and beauty of her many subjects; oftentimes offering multiple images of the same subject to provide a spectrum of emotion a single image can’t encapsulate.
